Welcome to the Distance Learning Program at SJALC. My name is Maria D. Martinez and I am the Distance Learning Instructor in our campus. Distance learning can be the course for you, either for your GED certification or for English as Second Language acquisition. Take a look at our two DL courses.
Pre-GED and GED Distance Learning (Hybrid)
The face-to-face lessons plus the on-line hours of instruction will provide students with the skills needed to take the state of Texas High School Equivalency tests and obtain the decided certification. All Pre-GED and GED students will use a web-based software called Aztec Software. The software is going to prepare students for the HSE tests level question structure they will encounter in reading, writing, science, social studies, and math. Aztec’s focus is to help identify a learner’s deficiencies and remediate those deficiencies by providing three different on-line courses: Foundations, Bridge-Pre-GED and GED-Kaplan Series.
Foundations*
- Develop independent study.
- Build a solid academic foundation in numeracy and literacy.
- Gain basic academic skills required to succeed in a working environment.
- Build basic academic skills toward a high school equivalency certification

GED Kaplan Series*
- Provide preparation for the GED® test.
- Develop high-level academic skills in all the 2014 GED® content areas: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies.
- Develop fully educational Common Core content related to the High School Equivalency certification.
- Gain computer literacy skills needed to succeed in the acquisition of the HSE diploma and working environment.
- Identify and remediate individual academic gaps with the official GED® practice tests
- Gain college readiness skills that help to pursuit higher education.

English as Second Language(Hybrid)
English Discoveries
This course will focus in developing English skills by incorporating face-to-face and online instruction. The course contains multiple topic-based units that provide students with practice in all key language skills – Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Web Literacy. All lessons incorporate a variety of activities that help student to integrate and reinforce computer skills while developing language abilities. The on-line instruction will be though English Discoveries is a web-based software that contain English Language interactive curriculum.
Listening
- Identify and respond to conversations, instructions, and different life situations.
- Demonstrate understanding and use strategies to confirm understanding.
- Recognize cultural conversations to understand basic communication and take active part in conversations.
Reading
- Comprehend key points and supporting details in simple texts and documents.
- Read for simple and real-life purposes to immediate needs and complex intentions.
- Locate information in simple and complex text.
- Recognize everyday words and complex vocabulary.
Speaking
- Use vocabulary and phrases to convey ideas and information..
- Use grammar in structuring communication.
- Use different strategies to monitor communication and begin to self-correct.
- Produce comprehensible oral language independently with control of pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation.
Writing
- Write for a purpose simple forms and/or charts.
- Organize information with simple structured sentences.
- Write with moderate grammar and spelling.
- Make basic edits using writing mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, etc.)
Grammar
- Recognize the fundamentals of grammar.
- Use common English language tenses and their usages.
- Edit texts.
- Students will be able to effectively write paragraphs.
Vocabulary
- Develop vocabulary through critical words for comprehending the text, multiple-meaning words, idioms, slang, figurative language and abstract terms.
Digital Literacy
- Develop digital literacy by using educational technology tools.
- Encourage self-learning and online learning.
- Use online communication tools and share meaningful information.
- Write on the web to build knowledge and create educational content using cognitive and technical skills
