Reading Workstations
Teaching reading is one of my favorite subjects to teach. At the beginning of each week I will go over the new spelling words and site words. After the initial group lesson the students then break up into their workstations to practice the concepts. Each station will have four to five students.Every group is grouped based on their reading levels. At the beginning of the year I give a running record to level the students. Below is a list of meaningful workstation ideas that I like to incorporate into the reading block.
Reading Workstation Ideas
→ Workstation 1: Reading
- Guided reading with the teacher.(This one I always have; it can be separate)
- Read, record, listen. Then improve it.
- Use puppets to retell a familiar story.
- Read and sing song lyrics or poems.
- Partner read
→ Workstation 2: Respond to Texts in Writing and Drawing
- Read a factual book then draw or write facts from the book.
- Write a letter to the author of a book.
- Write a different ending to a book.
- Write a letter to a character from a book.
- Compare and contrast two different characters, animals, etc.
→ Workstation 3: Word Work/Site Work
- Make letters using different manipulatives then reading them aloud to a partner.
- Picture sorts (blend, word family, digraphs, vowel sounds, initial sounds, etc.
- Computer or iPad games.
- Adding prefixes, suffixes to words.
- Speed sort(students time themselves reading words aloud).
