Descriptors

Descriptors

During this section you will learn how to create, amend and validate Descriptors.

Data within any well is split into runs, records and descriptions, however when making Logs or exporting files we often want data represented over the entire duration of the well. Take ROP (Rate Of Penetration) for instance, each drilling run InSite records what the ROP is and writes that data to the depth based Logging record. If we wanted to display this data on a log and we only looked at a single, we would only have data from the footbage drilling during that run. InSite has a specific tool called descriptors that will allow us to tie data together from multiple runs.

A descriptor is a table of identification keys that are common to multiple datasets. Effectively a list that tells InSite what data to use from what run. The data is not actually contained within the descriptor, but it is a mechanism for searching the database and combining data to be output as a continuous presentation or data file.

Descriptors will always be contained within well based and like the data they piece together, they can be time-based or depth-based. In all there are 7 different descriptors:

  1. Desc Rec Depth
  2. Desc Rec Time
  3. Desc Run Depth
  4. Desc Run Time
  5. Desc Var Depth
  6. Desc Var Time
  7. Desc Survey
